"The Sucarnochee Revue Begins New Season at UWA"

The Red Roots, Godspell in Concert, and William Faulkner interpreter,John Maxwell will be featured on the nationally syndicated radio program, The Sucarnochee Revue, 7 p.m. Friday, August 28 at the University of West Alabama’s Bibb Graves Auditorium in Livingston,Alabama.
The Red Roots are triplet sister Bluegrass singers from Hurley,Mississippi. Nika Taylor is featured on guitar, lead vocals, and mandolin. Nicole plays banjo, dobro, bass, drums, and Natalie alternates between violin, keyboard,and bass.
Godspell in Concert is a group of local singers and musicians under the direction of John Brown of York,Alabama. "Godspell" (an archaic spelling of the word gospel) is a 1970 musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since.
John Maxwell spent years reading letters and the biography Faulkner by Joseph Blotner. His co-writer for his show on William Faulkner was Tom DuPree, now of New York City.
"Faulkner's rich characterizations always seemed to me ideal for a theatrical piece," says Maxwell, who received the Best Actor Award for the screen version of the Faulkner show in the 2006 Atlanta Film Festival.
Now in its fifth year of production, The Sucarnochee Revue presents authentic music from the Black Belt region of Alabama,and Mississippi. The show not only preserves original music and the works by original artists, but also captures the evolution of that music and its current generation of performers. The Sucarnochee Revue also tapes in Meridian,Mississippi at the Temple Theatre the first Friday night of each month.
"What surprises people about the show is the fantastic range of musical genres," producer and host Jacky Jack White said. "We have blues, jazz, Dixieland, gospel, bluegrass, classical, country and more. Historically, there is an incredible amount of talent in the area."
The Sucarnochee Revue regulars include Revue producer and host Jacky Jack White, J. Burton Fuller, Britt Gully, and Mississippi Chris Sharp and the Jangalang String Band.

Sucarnochee Revue goes International
The Sucarnochee Revue returns to downtown Meridian and the Temple Theatre Friday August 7 at 7 pm for another taping of the nationally syndicated radio show. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door and in advance at the Temple box office.
This month’s Revue features Steve Gardner and the Jake Leg Stompers a totally unique Folk/Blues band.
Jack Owens, Jessie Mae Hemphill, James Son Thomas, Booba Barnes, and Sam Chatmon of the Mississippi Sheiks are just some of the great Blues and Roots musicians Steve Gardner has known and worked with over the years. Originally, from Jackson, Mississippi, Steve has made his mark as an author, photojournalist, and music lecturer. Gardner has assembled an international band called the Jake Leg Stompers. They play the "old-timey" music on primitive, authentic instruments.
When interviewed by early music researchers about the origins of local tunes Steve Gardner has said, "Many of the old timers from all over said that they believed that the music came from listening to natural, everyday sounds. They believed that after a song has been chanted in the hot fields or stomped out on the front porches and at fish fries for a long enough time, it got ‘stuck in people’s ears’ ". Steve’s latest release is "Walking the Dog" on Buffalo Records.
Also, featured on the program will be the Red Roots, the True Vine Fellowship Singers, and regular cast members Jacky Jack White, producer/host; Mississippi Chris Sharp and the Jangalangs; J. Burton Fuller; and Britt Gully.

Jacky Jack White receives Fellowship in Music Grant
The Alabama State Council on the Arts has named Jacky Jack White of Livingston,Alabama a recipient of the 2009-2010 Fellowship in Music Grant recognizing his work as a recording/performing artist, and songwriter.
Fellowships are the most prestigious of grants awarded to individuals by ASCA. Fellowships are given to individuals working in arts administration, crafts, dance, design, media/photography, music, literature, theatre, and visual arts. The awards recognize artistic excellence as well as professional commitment and maturity.
Jack has had songs on the charts as a singer/songwriter since 1985. Some of the artists who have recorded his songs are: Ray Stevens, Charley Pride, Buddy Jewell, Steve Wariner, Neal McCoy and Mark Lowery. Over one hundred of his songs have been recorded. "If I Didn’t Love You" by Steve Wariner, and "For Today" by Charley Pride are two of his best known songs. White also recorded several gospel songs including the number one Southern Gospel song, "When Men Pray". Jacky Jack White records on the Silverwolf label.
Currently, White is the host of the nationally syndicated radio show, The Sucarnochee Revue. The Revue is on fifty-nine radio stations in thirteen states, plus, the continent of Australia. The show is taped at the Temple Theatre in Meridian, Mississippi, and University of West Alabama in Livingston Alabama. The Sucarnochee Revue was recently honored by the Country Music Association, and was awarded a grant from the Black Belt Community Foundation. Jack lives in Livingston, Alabama with his wife Jody, and three children, Kate, Mary Mac, and Henry.

Maggie and The Misfits

Biography
Not many promoters are country singers, and not many country singers are promoters...........with one exception...........our very own "Maggie"!!!Margaret (Maggie) Penn was born and raised in E. St. Louis, Illinois. She grew up on Traditional Country music. Her dad would sit at the kitchen table ,with the radio tuned in to Skeets Yaney, Roy Queen, Johnny Rion.To make ends meet in those days Maggie's parents played the honky tonks. Her dad played the accordian and her mother sang. But Maggie didn't know this till way into the 70's.Her earliest influences were Kitty Wells, Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Webb Pierce. Ray Price, Wanda Jackson, Jean Shepard....etc....etc.In the 70's Maggie started writing songs, from trying to get her songs recorded...she ran across a young woman that was a dynamite singer. So Maggie started booking her (with no experience, I might add). But did quite well for her. In 1976 she started meeting people in Nashville, Tn. Among those she met were the Hank William's Sr. Original Drifting Cowboys. Maggie suggested to Hillous Butrum that the Cowboys should re group. Apparently they thought about it and Maggie got a letter from Hillous Butrum in May of 1977...asking her to be their agent. She was overwhelmed at this request, and began immediately to booking them.Then as the word got out, local bands started requesting that she book them. And in 1979 she strted booking Nashville biggie's. Along with the Drifting Cowboys she also booked Hank Williams Jr, Ernest Tubb, Faron Young, David Houston, Connie Cato. Jeanne Pruit, John Conlee.....and several others.Maggie had never thought of being a singer or entertainer herself. It happened quite by accident. She had a nice Karaoke set up in her basement that she had bought in December of 1999. Just for her own enjoyment, to pass the time. In February 2000 Maggie's mom entetered a nursing home. So Maggie got the idea to go to the nursing home and sing...her aunt and uncle were in the same home. The director of the nursing home agreed to allow her to come in on Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2000....from 2 to 3 PM.Maggie and her nephew (Tony) went to the nursing home with the intention that he was going to be doing the singing and Maggie run the sound and disks. But...only after a couple songs, Tony told Maggie to sing.... Maggie didn't want to but Tony kept insisting. The very first song she sang was Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough" When she finished her mom said to her....."why didn't you tell me you could sing like that"....her reply...was... "I didn't know I could"Maggie went back a few more times, as the patients liked the old country that Maggie sang. on one of the visits a nurse was there that hadn't been the previous times and heard Maggie. After Maggie finished the show the nurse called a friend of hers that had a bar.....and called Maggie to the phone. The bar owner booked Maggie a night in May.In the early to mid 80's country music took a different direction and no longer sounded like the country music Maggie grew up and loved. It kept changing till she finally quit listening to the radio. In January 2004...Maggie founded Traditional Country Music Foundation, Inc. to promote and preserve the traditional country music prior to the 80's Check out the web site for more information about it. Muscle Shoals Night Filmed at the Temple Theatre

The nationally syndicated radio show Sucarnochee Revue has another live radio taping Friday June 5, 7:00 p.m.at the Historic Temple Theatre in downtown Meridian,Ms. This month's edition features artists from the legendary Muscle Shoals studios from the 1960's through the 1980's. This week's show will also be filmed for television syndication.
Jimmy Johnson who played guitar, engineered, and produced for artists such as Wilson Pickett, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, and the Rolling Stones will be featured. Also, Norbert Putnam who played on the very first big hit out of the Shoals, Arthur Alexander's, "You Better Move On" will be on the show. Norbert went out to become Nashville's favorite pop producer and studio owner working with Jackson Browne, Jimmy Buffett,and many others. The rhythm section in Muscle Shoals was referred to in the song "Sweet Home Alabama" as the "Swampers".

Members of the Jimmie Rodgers Foundation are preparing for the anniversary of the legendary singer's death.A ceremony will be held Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery at Bonita in Meridian. The public is invited to attend, and show appreciation for the life and legacy of Rogers who is known across the world. Jimmie Rodgers was born September 8, 1897 and died May 26, 1933.A wreath laying ceremony has been held every year since the mid-1950's to commemorate his death.

Thacker Mountain Radio kicks off its final month of live shows for spring this week with an all-Mississippi line-up of guests at Off Square Books.
Our author will be this year’s John and Renee Grisham Writer-in-Residence, James Kimbrell, a native of Jackson and Leakesville. He is the author of two books of poems: The Gatehouse Heaven and My Psychic (both from Sarabande Books). Kimbrell’s work has appeared in numerous publications including the Bread Loaf Anthology of Poets and he has received a Whiting Writers' Award and fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the NEA. Publisher’s Weekly said of Psychic, “Vaulting whimsy ornaments a fundamentally earnest storytelling sensibility in Kimbrell's delightful sophomore collection.” Kimbrell is using his year in Oxford to work on a new collection of poems, The Sand Reckoner.
We’ll also welcome singer/songwriter (and Gulfport native) Alva Leigh to the show. Leigh’s tunes contain what one reviewer called “an organic honesty.” Her songs suggest, “a Deep South from the time of Faulkner, of black coffee, worn church pews, and faded summer dresses, all steeped in earthy, sacred imagery.” Leigh’s new collection of cover songs, Pulls the Covers, will be available for download on April 19. Finally this week, we’ll welcome back a Thacker favorite, Shannon McNally, who lives in Holly Springs with her husband (Thacker drummer) Wallace Lester and their little girl, Maeve. Shannon’s recent recordings have seen her share the mike with the likes of John Hiatt, Dr. John and our own Jim Dickinson. JIMMIE RODGERS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES SPRING LINEUP
Meridian, Mississippi
For the past 53 years the Jimmie Rodgers Foundation has been planning and producing quality entertainment in keeping with their goal of perpetuating the memory of the “Father of Country Music”, Meridian native Jimmie Rodgers. The history and heritage of preserving the acclaimed “Stage of Legends” is being followed by the lineup of activities for 2009.
Beginning with the selection of Jimmie Rodgers Queens on March 28th and ending with a big show downtown on April 25th the spring activities offer something for everyone!!
The selection of the 2009 Jimmie Rodgers Queens will take place on March 28th at the Temple Theatre Ballroom beginning at 9:00 a.m. Cathy Monsour is chairing this event and can be reached at 601-513-1514.
The Country Music Talent Competition will begin with preliminaries on Saturday, April 4th at the Temple Theatre Ballroom. The youth competition will begin at 9:00 a. m. and the adult competition will begin at noon. Youth Competition includes youth 13 years of age and younger. The adult competition will include contestants 14 years of age and over. Ten preliminary winners in both youth and adult will be chosen for final competition on April 25th. Overall winners will perform on stage at the concert that night. Prizes and trophies will be awarded in age categories. The Jimmie Rodgers Foundation is proud to join forces with the Meridian Council for the Arts Three Foot Festival on Saturday, April 4th in downtown Meridian with the Jimmie Rodgers Country Music Talent Competition and our Spring Gospel Concert.

At 6:30 p.m that evening the Jimmie Rodgers Foundation will present in the Temple Theatre a gospel concert featuring The McKameys from Clinton, Tennessee, 2nd Mile, The Harrells, The Gospel Strings and the Master’s Sound Quartet. The grand finale of events will be the Jimmie Rodgers Festival on April 24th and April 25th at Singing Brakeman Park in downtown Meridian.
Friday night the doors will open at 5:00 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. The opening act will be the Mayhem String Band at 7:00 p.m. followed by Mississippi Chris Sharp and the Jang-A- Lang Band at 8:30 p.m. and the final act will be the Spunk Monkees at 10 :00 p.m.
There will be activities in the Park all day Saturday with food, beverages and other attractions. The Talent Competition finalists will compete beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Saturday night activities will kick off with the doors opening at 5:00 p.m. The Jimmie Rodgers Talent Competition overall winners will open the concert. Santa Fe will play at 7:30 followed by headliner James Otto,nominee for New Male County Artist of the year by the AMC. Tickets are on sale now at the Jimmie Rodgers Museum (601-485-1808 and on www.iticket.com. Ticket prices are $10 for Friday night and $15 for Saturday night. Festival package for both nights will be buy one and get one free ($25). This will be a saving of $25.00 for a limited number of tickets. Dewey Lyndon "Spooner" Oldham will be featured on the nationally syndicated radio program, The Sucarnochee Revue, 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 at the University of West Alabama’s Bibb Graves Auditorium
Spooner Oldham teamed with Dan Penn to write such hits as The Box Tops' "Cry Like a Baby", "I'm Your Puppet", "A Woman Left Lonely" and "It Tears Me Up".
As an organist, he recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and at FAME Studios on such hit R&B songs as "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge, "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett and "I Never Loved a Man" by Aretha Franklin. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced it will induct Oldham as a sideman on April 4.
Now in its fifth year of production, The Sucarnochee Revue presents authentic music from the Black Belt region of Alabama,and Mississippi. The show not only preserves original music and the works by original artists, but also captures the evolution of that music and its current generation of performers.
"What surprises people about the show is the fantastic range of musical genres," producer and host Jacky Jack White said. "We have blues, jazz, Dixieland, gospel, bluegrass, classical, country and more. Historically, there is an incredible amount of talent in the area."
The February 20 show will feature gospel group The Sumter Harmony Boys; young country artist, Alex Goldman; Black Gospel greats, True Vine Fellowship singers; and Hank Adam Locklin, son of Opry star, Hank Locklin.
The Sucarnochee Revue regulars include Revue producer and host Jacky Jack White, J. Burton Fuller, Britt Gully, Track 45, and Mississippi Chris Sharp and the Jangalang String Band, and William Michael Morgan.
Teenager William Michael Morgan, recently signed a major management contract in Nashville with Tracy Byrd’s management team, Carter and Company.

Mississippi Arts Commission Partners with Mississippi Development Authority
to Offer Training Workshop for Festival Coordinators

JACKSON— Mississippi’s arts and cultural festivals are an important tool in community development. That’s why the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) and the Mississippi Development Authority’s Division of Tourism Development are working together to present training workshops for festival coordinators on January 27th and 29th.

The agencies will be hosting the workshops in Ridgeland (on January 27th at the Mississippi Crafts Center) and Indianola (on January 29th at the B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretive Center). Both meetings will feature presentations aimed at assisting festival coordinators in their work, including sessions on planning, fundraising and utilizing new media for strategic promotion. The sessions will be led by experienced festival coordinators and entertainment industry professionals who have worked on nationally recognized events, including the Juke Joint Festival, Crossroads Film Festival, and Huntsville’s Big Spring Jam.

The event is free of charge for individuals who coordinate Mississippi-based arts or cultural festivals, but reservations are required. Thacker Mountain Radio had a full house last week at Nutt Auditorium for our food show, but this week we’ll be back home at Off Square Books. The cool snap is supposed to warm up by then, so stop by for our Halloween Eve show.
We’ll summon the spooks with author Michael Connelly who has become one of the nation’s bestselling crime novelists since discovering a love for writing at the University of Florida where he studied under author Harry Crews. His latest mystery novel is The Brass Verdict (Little, Brown) which features his popular character, detective Harry Bosch, in his 13th appearance. For Verdict, Connelly takes us to Hollywood for a case involving a murdered studio executive and his lover. Here, Bosch teams up with defense attorney Mickey Haller to chase the killer before he strikes again – possibly making one of the sleuths the next victim. A native of the Mississippi Delta, pianist Eden Brent is known for her vast repertoire of jazz and blues standards. A protégé of the late Boogaloo Ames, she now performs extensively throughout the south and Europe. The Lexington Brothers, Micah Ginn (aka Durant) on vocals, and Travis “Moon Pie” Curtis (aka Pickens) on guitar, banjo, mandolin, piano, and vocals, wear their love for the Ole Miss Rebels on the sleeve of the red and blue blazers. Their CD, I’m for the Red and Blue is now available. Though their lyrics and subject matter are humorous, the Lexington Brothers’ sound is pure country. In helping salute his grandmother, Elsie and his great-aunt, Carrie, Meridian singer Rick McWilliams will be the special guest."This historical chapter of the 25 year old radio program will share a golden era of Meridian's musical history and will be heard on radio station AM 1010 WMOX, according to station manager Bill Smith. The time of broadcast will be from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25.The show will also feature a memorial tribute to Hamasa Temple Shrine Clown "Pee Wee" Russell, who passed away last week. "Pee Wee" had entertained kids and adults for many years and "touched all our hearts over this entire area," said Fitzgerald. A few listeners will be invited to participate on the program by calling in their funny stories concerning "Pee Wee." Four Tops frontman Levi Stubbs dies at 72

DETROIT (AP) — Four Tops lead singer Levi Stubbs, who possessed one of the most dynamic and emotive voices of all the Motown singers, died Friday at 72. He had been ill recently and died in his sleep at the Detroit house he shared with his wife, said Dana Meah, the wife of a grandson. The Wayne County medical examiner's office also confirmed the death.
With Stubbs in the lead, the Four Tops sold millions of records, including such hits as "Baby I Need Your Loving," "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)."
The group performed for more than four decades without a change in personnel. Stubbs' death leaves one surviving member of the original group: Abdul "Duke" Fakir.
Stubbs "fits right up there with all the icons of Motown," said Audley Smith, chief operating officer of the Motown Historical Museum. "His voice was as unique as Marvin's or as Smokey's or as Stevie's."
The Four Tops began singing together in 1953 under the group name the Four Aims and signed a deal with Chess Records. They later changed their names to the Four Tops to avoid being confused with the Ames Brothers.
They also recorded for Red Top, Riverside and Columbia Records and toured supper clubs.
The Four Tops signed with Motown Records in 1963 and produced 20 Top-40 hits over the next 10 years, making music history with the other acts in Berry Gordy's Motown stable.
Their biggest hits were recorded between 1964 and 1967 with the in-house songwriting and production team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. Both 1965's "I Can't Help Myself" and 1966's "Reach Out" went to No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart.
Other hits included "Shake Me, Wake Me" (1966); "Bernadette" and "Standing in the Shadows of Love" (both 1967).
They toured for decades afterward and reached the charts as late as 1988 with "Indestructible" on Arista Records. In 1986, Stubbs provided the voice for Audrey II the man-eating plant in the film "Little Shop of Horrors."
The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Original Top Lawrence Payton died of liver cancer in 1997. Renaldo "Obie" Benson died of lung cancer in 2005.
Stubbs was born in 1936 in Detroit and attended Pershing High School, where he sang with Fakir. They met fellow Detroiters Payton and Benson while singing at a mutual friend's birthday party, then decided to form a group.
"These are four of the greatest people I have ever known. They were major pros even before they came to Motown," Gordy said when the Four Tops' star was unveiled in Hollywood.
Stubbs is survived by his wife, five children and 11 grandchildren.

Thacker Mountain Radio has been on a roll this fall and we see no reason to step off the gas now. This week’s show will offer Wild West poetry, Memphis jams, as well as a thoroughly researched look at America’s favorite redheaded stranger and bio-diesel guru.
Our featured author this week is JOE NICK PATOSKI who has written about Texas and Texans for four decades. His crowning achievement might very well be his latest book, An Epic Life (Little, Brown) his towering tome (500-plus pages) chronicling the highs and lows (and highs) of country music legend, Willie Nelson. Joe Nick was a staff writer for Texas Monthly for 18 years where he first covered Nelson, and has contributed music articles to most every major publication from The New York Times to No Depression. He also wrote the southern rock chapter for the Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock and Roll and the Memphis chapter for The Voices of Civil Rights, an oral history project in which he interviewed our own Jim Dickinson. Poet JACK CROCKER is a Mississippi Delta native and the author of the poetry collection, Range Finding, as well as a new collection slated for release this November. He is also a songwriter who signed with Stax co-founder, Estelle Axton, on her Fretone Records in Memphis which later released “Disco Duck.” (Crocker claims no blame ). His eclectic career includes playing baseball for Delta State, earning a Ph.D at Texas Tech and becoming a recording artist, about which he says, “I made a good literature teacher.”
FREEWORLD has rocked the Mid-South for over 20 years with their unique brand of soul/funk-reggae/jam, all with a Memphis beat. The band’s fifth CD, From the Bluff, has just been released and was produced by Master Thacker Bushwhacker, Jim Dickinson. The Memphis Flyer says, “FreeWorld is basically a live animal with a multi-cultural groove that is consistently entertaining. The nationally syndicated radio program, The Sucarnochee Revue, takes the stage Friday, Oct.17 at 7 p.m. for a live taping at Bibb Graves Auditorium at The University of West Alabama.
The show introduces radio listeners in Alabama, Mississippi, and other parts of the nation to the artistic community of performers from the Black Belt region.
The Sucarnochee Revue, presented by UWA and the Sumter County Arts Council, can be heard on radio stations across the country.
Now in its fourth year of production, The Sucarnochee Revue presents authentic Black Belt music. The show not only preserves original music and the works by original artists, but also captures the evolution of that music and its current generation of performers.
The October show will feature all the regulars including Revue producer and host Jacky Jack White, J. Burton Fuller, Britt Gully, Track 45, and Mississippi Chris Sharp and the Jangalang String Band. Plus, the string musicians,Alabama Gravysoppers and singer/songwriter,Davis Raines.
The Alabama Gravysoppers are known for playing unruly 1920 & '30 string band music, including vaudeville and medicine show tunes.

Davis Raines records on APS Records in Nashville where his edgy style of writing has brought him much notice.Raines has a cut on the Grammy nominated album Wave On Wave by Pat Green.
Revue host Jacky Jack White's song "Precious Time" was performed by Chip Greene on MTV's "Making the Band" last week.

We have two authors this week starting with our old pal, New Orleans writer, TOM PIAZZA. Well known as a music writer, and with nine books to his credit, Piazza won a 2004 Grammy Award for his album notes to Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: A Musical Journey. This week, he will join us to read from his latest book, City of Refuge, (Harper) which is a panoramic novel about two families – one white, one black - whose lives are torn apart by Hurricane Katrina. The novel is the triumphant story of how the two families stitch their lives back together. Noted literary critic, Bob Dylan, said, "Tom Piazza's writing pulsates with nervous electrical tension - reveals the emotions that we can't define."
DIANE WILSON is a fourth-generation shrimper and the author of An Unreasonable Woman: A True Story of Shrimpers, Politicos, Polluters and the Fight for Seadrift, Texas (Chelsea Green, 2005). Wilson began fishing the bays off the Gulf Coast of Texas at the age of eight and by the time she was 24, she was a shrimp boat captain. After discovering that her home county was the number one toxic polluter in the country, she began her career as an environmental writer/activist, culminating in An Unreasonable Woman. This week on Thacker, she’ll be reading from her newest book, Holy Roller: Growing Up in the Church of Knock Down, Drag Out; Or, How I Quit Loving a Blue-Eyed Jesus. We’ve received glowing reports about Wilson’s appearance at last week’s southern book convention in Mobile, Ala. and have been advised to get ready to hear “the Word.” We can’t wait.
Our musical guests this week are the HEMPTONES, which feature our beloved sound wizard, Tom Quejay. Bassist Dave Woolworth sent this when we asked for a band bio: “The Hemptones are a spiritually improvisational theocratic tribe based on the religion of dub reggae. They were formed over the past two seasons as a channel of manifestation for what Bill Monroe once identified as the "ancient tones." These "ancient tones" can sometimes be perceived by the untrained ear as cacophonous.” Whew, not sure what that means, but suddenly we have the munchies.

That day started his main event: the San Pedro Country Music Festival. Some time later a photo link became unstable and erased half of the article, and created a mess in the web. Fortunately our readers emailed us and after some hours we could find the mistake. Sorry about it, Gustavo!. Now all of you can enjoy the article again. It is very interesting. Vince Gill is set to appear Oct. 9 when the Reunion Of Professional Entertainers pays tribute to late steel player John Hughey at the annual R.O.P.E. banquet and awards show in Nashville.
The event features Vince and the Time Jumpers, a conglomeration of stellar Nashville musicians that plays western swing regularly at the Station Inn. The ensemble’s audience is frequently dotted by the likes of Reba McEntire, Jimmy Dean, Sheryl Crow and Ronnie Dunn. Its set list typically consists of covers by such country, swing and traditional pop acts as Bob Wills, Gene Autry, Pee Wee King, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller.
Many of the Time Jumpers’ names are familiar to country fans who pay attention to liner notes: fiddlers Aubrey Haynie and Joe Spivey, vocalist Dawn Sears, bass player Dennis Crouch and steel guitarist Paul Franklin, among them. Paul replaced John Hughey, who died last November. John had played on classics by Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, George Strait and Vince, among many others.
John is not the only player being honored in October. Influential guitarist Duane Eddy will be inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center Oct. 28. He joins previously named inductees the Memphis Horns, the Crickets, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Al Kooper, Booker T. & The MG’s and producer Billy Sherrill.

A musical based on the life of late country music legend Conway Twitty will make its world premiere in Nashville next month. "It's Only Make Believe. Conway Twitty: The Man, The Music, The Legend" is the late singer's story told through the eyes of his children. It chronicles his rise from humble beginnings to become a '50s rock idol and later country legend. Creator and director Randy Johnson says he listened to every recording Twitty ever made as well as almost every interview he ever gave to prepare for the project. He also spent countless hours with Twitty's children to come to know the musical icon. "It's Only Make Believe" makes its world stage premiere on October 12th at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

Bear Family Records' remarkable new release, "Let Me Be Your Sidetrack: The Influence of Jimmie Rodgers," makes a persuasive argument that Rodgers is one of the most important figures in the history of country music.According to the liner notes for the six-disc boxed set released last week, 102 of the 109 songs Rodgers did in the late 1920s and early 1930s were later recorded by other artists -- a 94% "cover ratio" unmatched by any other country singer-songwriter, including Hank Williams.As the set's more than 150 tracks demonstrate, Rodgers' mix of traditional "hillbilly" music and the blues was a major influence not only on his contemporaries in country music but also on such other genres as folk, rock, jazz and even pop orchestras. Among the dozens of performers whose versions of Rodgers' material are featured in the Bear Family compilation: Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Harry Belafonte, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, King Oliver and Pete Seeger.

I met Mrs. Shine and Judge Harvey back in the mid to late 60's. Judge Harvey was in the Shrine with my dad, Robert Wiggs. (Bob to his friends). Mrs. Shine, as she had me call her taught my brother and I to play the guitar in the back of her house on Poplar Springs Drive. It was a tin shed like building that we practiced in, as I recall it was real small. I never saw or heard for that matter Mrs. Shine say a bad word or talk unkind about anyone. She was always real jolly and laughed alot with my brother and I. I can remember one day asking Mrs. Shine why she wore her hair on top of her head like she did and she told me it was called a beehive and it kept bees away from her. Later when I was grown I met her daughter Ann. She was Ann Landrum then. My dad found out he was kin to Jimmie Rodgers, when he found a letter Jimmie's mom wrote my grandmother. From that time on we were involved in the Jimmie Rodgers week. That to me was alot of fun when they had it at Ray Stadium. The singers tour buses would be on the field and we could go out and see them on the field. I will never forget meeting Ernest Tubb. He has Jimmie Rodgers guitar, on the back it said THANKS. Mr. Tubb told me he had a daughter name Karen to and he let me sit on his lap in the tour bus. My head was swelled for days. Mrs Shine was the one who introduced me to country music and to Jimmie Rodgers music. She was one of a kind. A very sweet and loving lady.

Thacker Mountain Radio is on the road! Join us this Saturday night, July 26, at the Neshoba County Fair, located ten miles outside of Philadelphia, Miss. Our show will begin at 7:30 PM under the big Pavilion on the fairgrounds’ historic Founder’s Square. The Neshoba performance will run approximately 90 minutes and present a raft of Mississippi writers and musicians.
Steve Stubbs, author of The History of the Neshoba County Fair, will appear along with Clarion Ledger political columnist Sid Salter (Coming of Age in Mississippi) who will recount some of the famous political speeches – from Bilbo to Barnett - that have been delivered at the site. Author Tom Franklin (Smonk, Poachers, Hell at the Breech) will read from his highly acclaimed work. Our musical guests will include a special appearance by the Charlie Mars Band, bluesman Kenny Brown, and the recently re-formed Blue Mountain, who will play an extra set after the radio broadcast concludes. Our inestimable house band, the Yalobushwhackers, will open the show.

IF I REMEMBER RIGHT IT WAS IN THE FALL OF 1958 WHEN I MET A FELLOW AT NORRIS CYCLE SHOP ON FRONT STREET NAMED AL HEMMING III. ONE FRIDAY NIGHT WHILE WE WERE OUT GETTING INTO TROUBLE AL SAID SOMETHING ABOUT GOING TO MS. HARVEY'S AND I DIDN'TMAKE THE CONECTION TO THAT AND THE PICKIN AND GRINNIN, BUT WHEN WE GOT THERE .MS HARVEY'S DAUGTHER ANN WAS HAVING A SLUMBER PARTY AND THERE MUST HAVE BEEN 10-15 GIRLS THERE AND I TOLD AL " SON I AM IN HEAVEN AND IF I AM DREAMIN DON'T BOTHER WAKING ME UP".ALSO MOST OF THE GIRLS WHO WERE OLDER THAN ME WERE FASINATED THAT I WAS REALLY BILL GRAY'S LITTLE BROTHER. THAT STARTED MY GOING TO THE PICKIN AND GRINNIN AND CONTINUED UNTIL I WENT IN THE NAVY IN 1960 AND EVERY TIME I CAME HOME ON LEAVE I WENT OUT THERE.

ONE NIGHT IN LATE 1959 I STOPPED AT MS HARVEY'S HOUSE AND SHE SAID I WAS JUST WHAT SHE WAS LOOKING FOR, SHE NEEDED SOMEONE TO DRIVE HER TO THE TRAIN STATION BECAUSE ELVIS WAS COMING THROUGH ON A TROOP TRAIN AND SHE WANTED TO SEE HIM AND WE ONLY HAD 15 MINUTES TO GET THERE.I WAS DRIVING DADDY'S 1951 BUICK AND WE LOADED UP, ME, MS. HARVEY, ANN AND I AM NOT SURE WHO ELSE. I MADE IT TO THE TRAIN STATION IN RECORD TIME, ABOUT 8 MINUTES. WHEN WE GOT TO THE STATION THE TRAIN WAS PULLING IN, THEY WERE USUALLY ON TIME THEN, BUT WE FOUND OUT THAT ELVIS WAS NOT ON THE TRAIN.MS. HARVEY TOLD ME SHE WOULD RIDE HOME WITH SOMEONE ELSE BECAUSE SHE WOULD"NT RIDE WITH ME AGAIN IF SHE HAD TO WALK HOME. I THINK SHE DIDN'T LIKE MY DRIVING. WONDER WHY?????

Author JEFFREY LEWIS was the credited writer on dozens of episodes of the acclaimed TV series Hill Street Blues (1981-87) which earned him two Emmy Awards and a Writers Guild Award. In an ambitious departure, the Yale/Harvard Law graduate left screenwriting to document American culture in a four novel series. The first two, Meritocracy: A Love Story and The Conference of the Birds, covered the 1960s and 70s and received great reviews. Lewis has published the third in the series, Theme Song for an Old Show (Other Press). Turning on the aftermath of the 1970s, Theme Song approaches the 1980s by drawing on Lewis’s own coming of age as a successful television writer at a time when television began to define modern American culture. Publisher’s Weekly recommends Old Show as “consistently entertaining.”
First time novelist WILLY VLAUTIN will also join us to read from his debut, The Motel Life (Harper Perennial). The London Times called The Motel Life a “rough, disturbing, heartbreaking piece of work.” Esquire said the book, is “a hugely compassionate, wildly original road movie of a novel.” Book Munch, a literary website, said, “If you like boozy frazzled Americana, this is a book to get VERY EXCITED ABOUT!” Of special interest is Vlautin recounting his memories of meeting the late Mississippi author Larry Brown.

Henry Young and the Jimmie Rodgers Stamp

How many of you have heard about or saw The Jimmie Rodgers postage stamp??Heres the story about how it all came about in a nut shell ! I came across this article written by a friend of this man and thought it worth sharing.................. let me take you back a little to the middle 70's when a man that was soon to become a good friend of ours sent us a piece of notebook paper with a sketch drawn out on it of a man, on the man's head was a railroad cap and the man had both his thumbs sticking up kinda leaning over his guitar.
Of course the man was supposed to be Jimmie Rodgers and what this man had drawn was supposed to be a stamp, and while I was looking at this crude drawing, I was thinking, it will be a cold day in St. Petersburg before this is ever something we'll be lickin' and stickin' on a letter, because in those years people were sending the Postmaster pictures of everything from their dog to their grandmother hoping they would soon see it on a stamp.
BUT my friend was no quitter, he made copies of that drawing and sent it to everyone he thought would read his letter, from the President on down. He never mentions the fact about how much he knew about Jimmie Rodgers, but he did mention that he to had been a brakeman for the railroads..The truth is, this man probably knows more about Jimmie Rodgers than any one else living today, not only was he doing a radio show in Delano, California playing all of Jimmie's records, and we mean the original 78's scratches and all, and they were all his, and he had a story to go with every single record, like when they were recorded, where they were recorded and probably how Jimmie was feeling and the clothes he was wearing on that particular day.
My friends name is "HENRY YOUNG" age has caught up with him now, but unlike most of us that never quite reach that one big dream, Henry did, because on May the 24th. 1978 Henry was sitting on a stage in Meridian, Mississippi, also on that stage and standing before a packed house in front of a microphone was the daughter of the great Jimmie Rodgers , Anita Rodgers Court, and almost the first words out of her mouth were these, "If it had not have been for Henry Young, there would have been NO stamp of my father".
Of course after others could see how far this had gone, naturally they tried to take credit for it, but Henry knew and the Rodgers family knew, and as I watched that show from the video that Henry had sent us, that old piece of notebook paper flashed through my mind, with a man and a guitar and two thumbs up, and I thought to my self, by god you did it Henry.
On November the 3rd. 1961 Jimmie Rodgers name was placed at the Country Music Foundation in Nashville, Tennessee, as the first entrant into the COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME.
Like Jimmie Rodgers, Henry Young's life centered around the Railroads, he to was a brakeman and he to loved the music, but I think Henry thought most about the honesty of Jimmie's music and how much it was a part of the people, a real part. People were poor in those days and usually only a few could afford the price of a record, but that seemed to be o.k., Henry would either go to a friends or stop by a store where they happened to be playing the latest J.R. record and a few times more of hearing it would know all the words and of course the first thing he would say when he ran across another friend was, "Have you heard Jimmie's new record" ?.

The Sucarnochee Revue is coming to East Mississippi Community College Scooba, Mississippi on Friday, July 18. The Revue, a celebration of musicians from the Black Belt region of Mississippi and Alabama, played to a sell-out crowd last summer during its first visit to EMCC. And Revue founder Jacky “Jack” White says he plans to make a habit of visiting the college’s Scooba campus.
Show time is 7 p.m. at Stennis Auditorium; tickets are $10. If you want to make a night of it, come early and have dinner on campus at the cafeteria. Dinner will be served from 5 p.m. until 6:15 p.m.; meal tickets are $6.
The lineup of Sucarnochee Revue talent includes: Nash Street of Starkville, winner this year of the 26th Annual Colgate Country Showdown at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville; Jacky “Jack” White; Second Mile; Carl Ray; Karen Elmore; Track 45; the Watermill Opry Band; Britt Gully; J. Burton Fuller; “Mississippi” Chris Sharp and the Jang-a-Lang String Band and Greg Mangum. EMCC alum George Cummings will also perform, as well as two current EMCC employees – bluesman Frank Rogers, who debuted with the Revue last year, and gospel singer Chuck Luke, making his first appearance.

The Sovereign State of Mississippi has given to the world four Miss America titles in the past few years, including Meridian's own, gorgeous, beautiful and talented, Susan Akin Lynch, who celebrated the title in 1986, 22 years ago. Susan, the daughter of Earl Akin and Dorothy Akin Little, walked across many stages, sang many songs, flashed her gorgeous smile to countless cameras in many states after she stepped into that national spotlight as "Miss America" of 1986. Now, Susan Akin Lynch is a housewife and mother, and doing a lot of volunteer work in the Jackson area where she lives with her family."Remember When" producer-host Carl Fitzgerald said, "I think it's time that we remember this wonderful and talented lady who put Meridian on the map when she was crowned the winner on that show in 1985." He said, "We will present 'The Susan Akin (Lynch) story' and salute this great friend on our radio classic special this Saturday from Noon until 3 p.m. on AM-1010 WMOX." Station manager Bill Smith urged listeners to tune in Saturday and to call in at special times, where a few listeners will be allowed to speak "on the air" with Susan. The former "Miss America" winner will appear live on the first half of the show, Fitzgerald said. The call-in numbers are (601)693-1891 and (601)693-1010. In Susan's story, "We shall endeavor to give all the facts, of the hard work and personal dedication it takes (took) for Susan or anyone to capture the number one spot of Miss America," said Fitzgerald.Bill Smith said WMOX listeners will remember that Susan Akin Lynch was a co-host on our morning show with my dad almost 20 years ago and they made a great team for listeners.The last portion of the radio show this week will feature a "Salute to the Veterans and Military Service men and women," and there will be a number of celebrated guests to appear on the program. "Remember When" has been on the air for more than 25 years and is a copyrighted feature of Carl Fitzgerald, who created the special on WMOX in January of 1983. Also appearing as regulars on the show are Noel Adcock, musical host and Thelma McDonald Fitzgerald. Jim Myrick is the assistant board engineer.
